South India in Winter: The Complete Travel Guide (December to February)

By Club Travels | South India Tour Packages

Why Winter Is the Best Time to Visit South India

While much of Europe, North America and Australia’s southern coast deals with cold, grey weather, South India in winter offers sunshine, calm seas, green landscapes and comfortable travel conditions. From December to February, the heat and humidity of summer fade, the heavy monsoon rains have mostly passed, and the whole region is at its most welcoming.

This is also the festival season. Temples glow with lamps, Christmas and New Year are celebrated in Goa and Kerala, and classical music and dance fill Chennai and Mahabalipuram. If you are planning a trip from the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, the USA, Australia or Israel, winter is the season when South India is easiest to enjoy.

This guide covers the weather, the best places to go, festivals, sample itineraries, packing tips and booking advice, so you can plan with confidence..

Best Places to Visit in South India in Winter

1. Kerala Backwaters (Alleppey and Kumarakom)

Winter is the best time for a houseboat stay. Skies are clear, the water is calm and the evenings are pleasant. Spend a night gliding past coconut palms, village life and rice fields, with freshly cooked Kerala meals served on board.

2. Munnar and Thekkady

Munnar’s tea plantations look their best in the cool, misty winter air. Early mornings can be cold, so it is the perfect season for plantation walks, viewpoints and a hot cup of local tea. Nearby Thekkady and Periyar offer spice gardens and wildlife boat rides with a chance to see elephants.

3. Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal

If you want to escape the heat entirely, the Nilgiri and Palani hills are ideal. Expect toy-train rides, eucalyptus forests, tea estates, lakes and crisp air.

4. Goa

December to February is peak beach season, with calm seas, beach cafes, markets and lively Christmas and New Year celebrations. It is also the busiest and most expensive period, so book early.

5. Tamil Nadu’s Temple Circuit

The giant gopurams of Madurai, the Chola temples of Tanjore, the shore temple at Mahabalipuram and the sacred town of Rameswaram are far easier to explore in cooler weather. Walking between temples is much more comfortable than in summer.

6. Hampi and Karnataka Heritage Towns

The boulder-strewn ruins of Hampi, the cave temples of Badami and the royal city of Mysore are best visited in winter, when you can spend long days outdoors without the summer heat.

7. Varkala, Kovalam and Marari Beaches

For a quieter beach holiday than Goa, Kerala’s coast offers clifftop cafes in Varkala, calm bays in Kovalam and peaceful fishing-village stretches at Marari.

Winter Festivals and Events in South India

Dates change each year, so always confirm before you book.

  • Christmas and New Year (Goa, Kochi, Kerala): Midnight Mass in historic churches, decorated streets and beach parties. Fort Kochi also hosts a lively carnival around New Year’s Eve.

  • Mahabalipuram Dance Festival (usually December to January): Classical dance performed against the backdrop of ancient rock-cut monuments.

Winter Is Also the Best Season for Ayurveda

Traditionally, the cooler months are considered ideal for Ayurvedic treatments, because the body is better able to rest and respond to therapy. Kerala is the home of Ayurveda, and many visitors combine a wellness retreat with a short sightseeing tour.

What to Pack for South India in Winter

  • Light cotton clothing for the coast and plains
  • A fleece or light jacket for Munnar, Ooty and Kodaikanal evenings
  • Modest clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temple visits
  • Comfortable shoes that are easy to remove at temples
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Insect repellent, especially for backwater evenings
  • A refillable water bottle and basic medicines
  • A power adapter (India uses Type C, D and M sockets)

Tips for Booking a Winter Trip

  1. Book early. Christmas to New Year is the busiest period. Hotels, houseboats and drivers fill up months ahead, and prices are higher.
  2. Consider January and early February. Weather is excellent and crowds are often smaller than at the end of December.
  3. Do not rush. South India has long driving distances, so plan one or two nights per base rather than trying to see everything.
  4. Use a private driver. It is comfortable, flexible and safe, especially for families and first-time visitors.
  5. Check visa and entry rules. Rules change, so confirm the current Indian e-visa requirements for your nationality before booking flights.
  6. Get travel insurance that covers medical care and cancellations.
